The mandate of the Canadian National Committee (CNC) is to guide and coordinate the efforts of its Canadian participants working in the road sector and to contribute, as appropriate, to the objectives of the World Road Association (PIARC). It also serves as a forum for sharing information on new technologies and practices relating to transportation infrastructure among Canadian businesses, Transport Canada, and PIARC’s other national committees. In addition, it fosters international dialogue in the road sector.
On September 10, 1999, Canada’s Minister of Transport agreed that Transport Canada, on behalf of the Government of Canada, would form the CNC of PIARC . The Committee’s purpose is ultimately to represent all Canadian PIARC members, be they governmental, regional, collective and individual members. Among these members are representatives from Transport Canada, provincial and territorial departments of transportation, private transport companies, road transport associations, and institutions of higher learning.
The business of the CNC-PIARC is overseen by a Board of Directors which is comprised of members or officers of the CNC-PIARC, as follows:
Other members of CNC-PIARC and other individuals named by the Chair may serve on the Board of Directors in an advisory capacity as experts or consultants. The members of the Board of Directors members of the Board of Directors are named at the General Meeting immediately following a World Road Congress and serve for a period of four years. The Board of Directors has the authorities necessary to manage and oversee CNC-PIARC business and, in general, all matters related to the pursuit of CNC-PIARC’s objectives. Meetings of the Board of Directors are held at least once every six months and are called by the Chair or, in the latter’s absence, the Secretary General. The Board meets as often as the CNC PIARC’s interests require and with at least one-third of its members requesting a meeting.
